Celebration of Light Event - 2013

The 2013 Community Art Project  facilitated the creation of a cooperative cultural art piece.  For several months, art classes  created culture-specific “Symbols of Light.”  Heavy paper, fabric, and other materials were used to create small depictions of lighthouses, Kwanzaa kinara, Chinese zhĭ yĭng xì, Kongminglanterns, Shabbat/Havdalah candles, Menorah, stars of David, Indian diyas, and others.  At the event these artistic creations were available at each table along with art supplies for participa nts to create their own.  Each table was given a canvas for table members to work together to create a collective art piece.  The canvases were then put together in two large multimedia paintings which were shown at the Art Museum of Mississippi.
